According to a study published in the online edition of Neurology, the official journal of the American Academy of Neurology, people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are more likely to experience a stroke than those without the ailment.

In the study, a total of 85,006 individuals who were diagnosed with IBD through a biopsy were enrolled. They were paired with five people who shared the same birth year, gender, and county of residence.

The study showed that individuals with IBD were 13% more likely to suffer from a stroke within 25 years after their diagnosis than those without IBD. The researchers reported that 3,720 participants with IBD had a stroke in comparison to 5,599 of the people who did not have IBD in the 12 years follow-up period.

They also found that IBD increased the risk of ischemic stroke, caused by a blockage of blood flow to the brain, rather than hemorrhagic stroke, a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain.

Additionally, they compared the data of full siblings enrolled in the study to examine some genetic components predisposing people to the disease. This comparison showed that people with IBD had a higher risk of stroke than their siblings without IBD. They also observed that the overall risk of stroke was 11% higher in siblings with IBD than those without IBD. This result was consistent with the initial findings of the study.
